India’s second-largest private sector lender, HDFC Bank, has launched its mobile banking application in Hindi, with the aim of enabling customers to transact in a language "they are comfortable with".

The new app will allow users to access mobile banking in Hindi from their Android smart phones.

HDFC has also launched its Hindi SMS banking service, which is applicable on any mobile phone handset.

With the launch of the Hindi mobile application and Hindi SMS banking services, approximately 565m Indians in the Hindi speaking regions of the country will have instant access to their bank accounts in their preferred language, according to HDFC.

Users will be able to conduct over 30 banking transactions via the new app, ranging from balance enquiry and transaction history checking to fund transfers and bill payments.

The Hindi SMS banking service will allow customers to carry out a set of 10 banking transactions such as balance enquiry, mini statement request and stop cheque by sending an SMS.

HDFC has also launched Netsafe on Mobile via which customers can create a single-use virtual card for shopping online, with the aim of preventing against card frauds over the internet.

Birendra Sahu, senior executive vice president, direct banking channels and premier banking, said:

"We are constantly in touch with our customers and evolve to suit their changing needs to make banking safe and convenient. Our Hindi mobile banking service and the Netsafe Card is one such step in this regard and will go a long way in the spread of electronic banking to the remote corners of India."

Rahul Bhagat, country head, retail liabilities, marketing and direct banking channels, said: "We understand that the mobile phone will be the first access point to internet for many Indians and for anyone to succeed in this space, the offering has to be in their language and in a manner that they can understand."

According to HDFC, 82% of all the lender’s customer-initiated transactions happen over electronic channels.

HDFC’s mobile banking app shows users a customised image and security message so that a customer is assured that he or she is using a genuine HDFC mobile application.
