PKO Bank Polski (PKO), Poland’s largest
bank by assets, has partnered with digital security vendor, Gemalto
for the migration of its portfolio of Visa debit cards from
magnetic stripe technology to EMV contactless.
The deployment process
kicked off in September and PKO aims to issue around 6.5m Visa
payWave cards by the end of 2011.
PKO said that it was the
first Polish card issuer to convert an entire portfolio of cards to
contactless technology.
Visa payWave cardholders
will be able to use their card for transactions up to PLN50 ($17)
in “thousands” of acceptance points, including department stores,
fast-food restaurants, cinemas, bookstores and
pharmacies.
Katarzyna Sosin, PKO’s
director for credit cards said: “For such a massive rollout, in
such a short period of time, we needed a reliable partner with a
proven track record in EMV contactless deployments and a strong
presence in Poland.”
