Dutch banking major ABN Amro has teamed up with the Dutch authorities and 11 private parties to fight helpdesk scams.

Private parties involved in this public-private partnership are Microsoft, Teamviewer, KPN, VodafoneZiggo, Western Union, MoneyGram International, ING, Rabobank, De Volksbank en Dutch bitcoin company association Verenigde Bitcoinbedrijven Nederland.

Public parties such as the Netherlands Public Prosecution Service, the National Police and the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets are also part of the agreement.

The parties involved inked a declaration of intent under which they agreed to contribute their own expertise to find a solution for this form of crime.

In a helpdesk scam, victim receives a call from someone claiming to work for the helpdesk of a large company. The scammers then use various deceitful techniques to gain access to the victim’s computer and transfer funds via Internet banking. The funds are quickly moved out of the country once transferred.

ABN Amro head of crime prevention Emiel den Boer said: “For us, this declaration of intent logically follows from our other partnerships to combat cybercrime and fraud.
