The global banking and payments industry noticed a 9.2% drop in IT hiring activity in September 2021 over the previous month, led by Citigroup’s 8% share, according to GlobalData’s Jobs Analytics database.
The banking and payments industry’s overall hiring activity declined 2.04% when compared with August 2021.
Noticeably, IT jobs accounted for a 15.89% share of the global banking and payments industry’s hiring activity in September 2021, down 1.13% over the last three-month average share.
According to GlobalData, IT job opportunities available at the end of September 2021 were 2.99% lower when compared with the previous month.
The decrease was a result of 5.32% higher job postings as compared to job closures during the month.

Software and Web Developers, Programmers, and Testers with a share of 67.19% emerged as the top IT occupation in the banking and payments hiring activity in September 2021, an 11.46% decline over the previous month. Miscellaneous Computer Occupations came in second with a share of 14.64% in September 2021, down 4.59% over the previous month.
The other prominent IT roles include Database and Network Administrators and Architects with a 9.27% share in September 2021, a decline of 10.66% over the previous month, and Computer and Information Analysts with a 5.54% share in September 2021 and a drop of 28.87% over August 2021.
Top five banking and payments companies by recruitment activity in September 2021
The top five companies, in terms of number of jobs as tracked by GlobalData, accounted for a combined average decline of 12.16% share in the overall IT recruitment activity of global banking and payments industry during September 2021 over August 2021.
Citigroup posted 2,125 IT jobs in September 2021 and registered a drop of 1.57% over the previous month, followed by JPMorgan Chase with 1,796 jobs and a 12.86% decline. Wells Fargo with 1,459 IT jobs and Banco Santander with 870 jobs, recorded a 27.77% decline and a 21.83% drop, respectively, while Citizens Financial Group recorded a 15.86% rise with 862 job postings during September 2021.
Regional composition of IT hiring in banking and payments industry
North America emerged as the leading region in the global banking and payments IT hiring activity in September 2021 with a 50.97% share, which marked a 2.58% drop over the previous month.
Asia-Pacific stood next with 28.98%, registering a 22.76% month-on-month decline. Europe was the third leading region with a 16.51% share and a 16.07% drop over August 2021.
In the fourth place was South & Central America with a share of 1.98% and a month-on-month drop of 1.87%. Middle East & Africa stood at the bottom of the table with a share of 1.46%, registering an 8.29% decrease over the previous month.
