Bank Zachodni, the Polish bank that was snapped up by Santander
in September, has launched a near field communications payments
trial with mobile network operator Orange.

Poland’s fifth largest bank by assets has kicked off the six
month trial in corporation with MasterCard, using the card issuer’s
PayPass contactless technology.

The contactless NFC will work on the Polish network of Orange, a
UK-headquartered telecommunications provider.

NFC and contactless payments are taking off fast in Poland.

Santander beat off rival bids from BNP Paribas
and Polish lender PKO to acquire Allied Irish Banks’ 70% stake in
Bank Zachodni for PLN11.7bn ($4.26bn) last September.

In December, Poland’s 11th biggest
bank assets, GE Money-subsidiary BPH began to replace its magnetic strip card
portfolio with contactless credit cards deploying Visa’s payWave
