Piraeus Bank is to target the Greek consumer
banking market with the launch of the country’s first stand-alone
online bank, Winbankdirect.

Winbankdirect is an extension of the bank’s
existing electronic banking channel Winbank, which has signed up
more than 150,000 customers.

The first offering from the venture is a
deposit product combining the benefits of a current account and a
time deposit. This is to be followed by the introduction of
insurance and loans.

Winbankdirect customers will also have access
to Piraeus’ 359-strong branch network.

Sotiris Sirmakezis, deputy general director of
Piraeus Bank, said the success of the current online channel
demonstrates that e-banking has reached its “maturity in the Greek
market.
He added that Winbankdirect will offer “unique, customisable and
better priced products that will not be available in Piraeus Bank’s
offline channels”.

The move follows the bank’s Egypt-based unit
going live with Fiserv’s Universal Banking platform in April after
the Cyprus-based unit implemented the vendor’s technology in
January 2009.
