Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CommBank) has extended its alliance with Amazon Web Services (AWS), with an aim to enhance its cloud and AI capabilities.

The new five-year partnership will see AWS continuing to serve as the preferred cloud provider of the bank.

This partnership is pivotal to CommBank’s mission to become “tomorrow’s bank today” for its customers.

It is expected to help ramp up artificial intelligence (AI) adoption and support the deployment of new customer services more rapidly and securely.

The tie-up was key to the development of the CommBiz Gen AI-powered messaging service, designed to serve business banking customers.

By utilising CommBank’s DevOps Hosting platform and the Group Generative.AI Platform, this service progressed from concept to production in only six weeks.

CommBank’s DevSecOps implementation, coupled with its cloud modernisation programme, has doubled its capacity to deploy production changes.

The cloud modernisation initiative will further streamline the bank’s technology infrastructure, expedite AI adoption – with AI models doubling to over 2,000 in 2024.

To help business banking customers, the CommBank and AWS partnership will simplify digital interactions through the recently launched CommBiz messaging service.

This service utilises AI to provide rapid, relevant information to customers, drawing from an extensive pool of user guides and FAQs. It leverages Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases, Claude 3 and Cohere LLMs, and Amazon OpenSearch.

AWS is also crucial in fostering the professional growth of CommBank engineers, providing them with essential tools, training, and certification opportunities.

This initiative includes the AWS Cloud Certification, which is designed to accelerate technological innovation within the bank.

CommBank chief technology officer Rodrigo Castillo said: “As customer adoption of digital banking continues to grow, we’re harnessing AI and cloud to deliver faster, safer and more personalised digital banking services.”

Following the establishment of CommBank’s AI Factory in September 2024, powered by Amazon EC2 P5 Instances, the bank has been able to expedite AI integration across its operations.

This facility enables engineers to safely develop and refine AI solutions.

Enhancements to CommBank’s DevOps Hosting Platform (DHP), hosted on AWS, have also been made.

This platform ensures responsible AI use and is integrated with Amazon Bedrock and Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases for model access and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) techniques.

In November 2024, CommBank updated the CommBank app with three anti-scam security features to minimise customer losses.
