Engine by Starling, the Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) business originating from Starling Bank, has established its first overseas subsidiary in the US.
The new entity, Engine by Starling Services US, is registered in Delaware and aims to serve as a base for the company’s expansion into the North American market.
The subsidiary is currently in the process of assembling a team and is evaluating potential locations for a regional headquarters on the East Coast, with North Carolina, Florida, and Washington DC identified as possible sites.
The workforce will comprise a combination of local hires and secondees from Engine’s UK team, with leadership provided by a president.
The North American market presents substantial opportunities for Engine, which can leverage its expertise to assist approximately 4,000 mid-tier banks, community banks, and credit unions in the region, stated the UK-based challenger bank.
By utilising Starling Bank’s cloud-native technology, Engine aims to support these organisations in transforming customer experiences while simultaneously improving operational efficiency and lowering costs.
Engine by Starling CEO Sam Everington said: “We are already having really positive discussions with a number of potential partners in North America because Engine solves some of the major challenges facing banks and credit unions here.
“Engine delivers a unique ability to unify tech stacks, drive efficiency and encourage innovation through one managed service.”
Since its inception in 2022, Engine has played a role in the establishment of Salt Bank, Romania’s first digital bank, which has secured a 4% share of the country’s banking market since its launch in 2024.
Additionally, Engine has partnered with AMP in Australia to develop a new digital bank aimed at small businesses, which is set to launch in February 2025. Both digital banking initiatives were executed within a 12-month timeframe.
Starling Bank Group CEO Raman Bhatia said: “This is a significant step as we take the technology that has enabled Starling’s success in the UK to more financial institutions around the world.
“In Engine we have a world-class SaaS business that delivers the technology and the expertise that banks need to succeed in the digital age.”
