ANZ has added voice ID technology to its Grow by ANZ mobile banking app, allowing customers to authorise higher value fund transactions that till now required customers to use internet banking or visit a branch.

The technology, provided by biometrics firm Nuance, can be used to authenticate “Pay Anyone” payments of more than $1000, and BPAY payments of more than $10,000 on mobile.

The bank plans to eventually incorporate the voice authentication technology in its other digital channels.

ANZ managing director of customer experience and digital channels Peter Dalton said: “This is a significant security update that will make it easier for our customers to complete high value transactions on their smartphones. Customers increasingly want the convenience of banking on their digital devices and this solution delivers that with the added level of voice biometric security.

“This will be particularly good news for our small business customers who regularly need to make payments of more than $1000 on the go and will only need their voice to authorise those transactions.”

In April 2017, the bank announced plans to integrate the voice biometrics technology and pilot it with staff and select customers the following month.
