25 May will mark six years since GDPR came into effect. While AI enters the public sphere and triggers a race to attack and defend between cybersecurity specialists and cyber criminals, regulations and policies imposing restrictions seem like they are holding businesses and organisations back.

Meanwhile, the unchecked world of cybercrime is expanding at an exponential rate. The growth in persistent cyberattacks and breaches poses questions about whether the existing regulations are outdated.

GDPR is the toughest set of privacy restrictions in the world, says Alasdair Anderson, VP at Protegrity. He argues that is more important than ever to put data security measures in place to adhere to the rules.

GDPR as a competitive advantage

Says Anderson: “If GDPR practices are followed its compliance can become a competitive advantage. It is important to note that GDPR doesn’t call for stricter cyber security measures, rather expecting organisations to take ‘appropriate’ action, and instead focuses on restrictions on personal data.

“The reason for this importance can be demonstrated in two simple scenarios. First, a bad actor uses AI innovation to find a novel way through the latest cybersecurity software and easily accesses personal data of employees and customers. And second, an employee secretly uses AI on a public platform to automate a time-consuming task, putting private data at risk.

“However, if an internal zero-trust approach is adopted, ascertaining what the private data is, who needs to see it, and appropriately anonymising it, the risk of breaching data is mitigated. And if the data is breached it will be deemed worthless.
