Barclays attracted widespread frustration when a malfunction caused its cash withdrawal, online, and telephone banking services to be temporarily suspended.
On the night of 31 October 2013, customers of the UK’s second largest bank by assets were prevented from accessing their accounts for several hours, with many taking to Twitter to express their frustration.
Among the disgruntled customers, Chloe Pillai tweeted: "What’s going on with #barclays? Card was refused, no online banking, mobile banking or telephone banking? No information!!"
In response, the bank tweeted from its Barclays UK Twitter account: ‘We had some technical issues last night with customers using debit cards and digital services. These have now been fixed,’ and ‘We’re sorry for any problems this may have caused you. If you’re concerned, or are still having trouble please contact us’.
Online banking was restored around 12:40am on Friday, but some customers reported continuing issues with debit cards, mobile apps, and ATM use.
Twitter user Voitek Zylinski, tweeted: "Barclay’s Online Banking seems to be up! Unfortunately I use Mobile PIN sentry which is still unavailable."
The malfunction was reminiscent of a similar problem in August 2010, which saw thousands of customers across the UK unable to withdraw money from their accounts.
