Barclays has partnered with payments merchant Blackhawk Network to enable its Pingit service users to send gift vouchers from mobile to mobile.
The launch is scheduled for late August and plans to encompass brands across entertainment, dining, gaming, fashion, health, beauty and leisure.
US-headquartered prepaid products and payments firm Blackhawk Network was behind the launch of the Barclays Pingit app in early 2012. Pingit was the first free service in the UK for making instantaneous payments using only mobile numbers.
"Gifting through mCommerce is a leap forward for the payments market. For businesses, e-gifting is a cost-effective way to acquire new customers and maximise incremental spend.
"For consumers, the ability to purchase and send gift cards across digital channels provides far greater ease and convenience than having to make a trip to a particular merchant to purchase a physical gift card," said Matthew Howe, Blackhawk Network managing director, Europe.
Pingit is also available to non-Barclays customers who can use the service to create and access a third-party digital wallet instead of linking directly to a Barclays account. Since its launch, the app has been downloaded more than three million times and transferred in excess of £525m ($884m).
