Barclays has announced the resolution of a technical issue that left thousands of customers unable to access their accounts over the weekend.

The bank has assured customers that they can now use its payment apps and online services, although some may still experience delays in checking updated balances and payment processing.

The incident, which occurred on the deadline day for HM Revenue and Customs self-assessment tax returns, was confirmed by Barclays to be a “technical issue” and not the result of a cyber-attack or malicious activity.

The bank acknowledged the significant impact of the outage, with some customers reporting disruptions to planned house moves.

Customers who have faced difficulties due to the outage have been advised to contact the bank to discuss their individual situations.

However, they were warned of potential longer waiting times due to the high volume of affected users.

Early on Sunday, the Downdetector website, which monitors service complaints, indicated that customers were still encountering access issues, although the number of reports had started to decline.

A Barclays spokesperson was quoted by The Guardian as saying: “The technical issue impacting our customers on Friday and Saturday has been resolved and delayed payments processed. Customers can use our app, bank online, call us, use their cards and withdraw cash.

“We are working on bringing balances up to date for some of our customers and addressing any outstanding issues. We are very sorry for any disruption and will ensure that no impacted customer is left out of pocket.”
