CaixaBank, Nestlé Market and the Payment Innovation Hub have launched the first facial recognition payment system in a business in Spain.
The solution enables customers to pay solely using their face without the need for a card, phone or cash. The initiative will be trialled for three months at Nestlé Market store in Barcelona in order to analyse how the technology adapts. In addition, the test is to see how the technology shapes up during busier periods such as Christmas.
Customers can use the system through downloading the Face to Pay Nestlé Market app. Once downloaded, customers must register the personal details, their card and facial image.
Following the registration process, customers can pay for their purchases, where exclusive fast check-out has been set up.
When making the payment, the customer will take a selfie with the checkout camera. The system compares that image with the biometric pattern stored in the general database, based on the photo uploaded when registering. If there is a match, the system proceeds with the payment process.
Committing to facial recognition
According to CaixaBank, the initiative represents a step further in its strategy of committing to facial recognition technology. In particular, CaixaBank aims to use facial recognition in environments where there is a clear benefit to the customer.

The ATMs with facial recognition and the new payment system at Nestlé Market are fully commercial projects.
Furthermore, the new system comes as businesses are put under increasing pressure to digitally transform.
With the solution, Nestlé’s goal is to become a pioneer in digital innovation and its impact on consumer purchasing habits.
