Malaysian lender Maybank has added facial and voice recognition authentication service to its Maybank2u mobile banking app.

The new feature will be supported on mobile devices with a minimum of 2.0 MP front-facing camera and a built-in microphone. Earlier, the app only supported fingerprint authentication through Quick Touch, a feature added in 2015.

The latest move comes as the bank recorded a year-on-year growth in mobile transactions of 95%.

The bank’s head of community financial services Hamirullah Boorhan said that by the end of 2017, more than one billion mobile transactions worth over MYR22bn would have passed through the Maybank2u app.

At present, the biometric features will enable customers to access their accounts and check balances, with further transactions requiring login with passwords. The bank also intends to expand capabilities of the biometrics eventually.
