American banking giant Wells Fargo has asked a majority of its employees globally to work in the wake of massive coronavirus (Covid-19) outbreak, according to Reuters.

The move will see most of the Well Fargo employees, who do not interact with customers directly, working from home.

However, the branch workers, operations, and call centre employees would continue to report to the office, the report added citing a memo issued by the bank.

A Well Fargo spokeswoman said: “Customer-facing and some non-customer-facing Wells Fargo employees will continue to work from Wells Fargo offices to serve customers, support operations, or support related activities such as business continuity planning.”

The bank said that nearly 62,000 of its employees are already working remotely.

Wells Fargo is one of the largest US banks employing nearly 250,000 workers, according to Reuters.

Banks around the world are working to keep their business running amid the coronavirus spread.

Coronavirus cases have continued to swell in the US in recent days.

The pandemic has so far claimed 7,900 lives and infected approximately 198,000 people.

Recently, JPMorgan asked employees around the world to work from home and many European banks shuttered hundreds of branches to curb the Covid-19 spread.

Earlier this month, major American banks imposed restrictions on international travel to immune their operations and Wells Fargo was also one of those banks.

The European Central Bank (ECB) also asked a majority of its 3,500 staff in Frankfurt to work from home to measure its coronavirus (COVID-19) preparations.

Last week, HSBC Bank sent more than 100 employees home after a worker from the research department tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
