South Africa’s second largest bank by market value, FirstRand,
is to replace all its ATMs and open new ones to offer real-time
cash deposits.
Speaking to RBI, Gift Manyanga, chief executive of the
bank’s Easy Plan business – a network of branches targeted to serve
the unbanked sector – said that the group was replacing its ATMs
with new, more modern ones.
“We’ve got more than 5,000 ATMs. We are currently replacing our
older ATMs with new ones. Over the course of the next 18 months, we
will open about 1,000 ATMs. It is a continuous maintenance
project,” Manyanga said.
He added that the bank’s ATMs are provided by both NCR as well
as Diebold.
Manyanga spoke to RBI about FirstRand’s Easy Plan
branches, expansion plans and targets across Africa, including
FirstRand’s first branch in Tanzania, and bank fees in South
Africa.
The full interview will be published in the next issue of
RBI, to be published in the first week of April.
