While there is no good time to suffer technical difficulties, HSBC appears to have a knack for picking some rather inconvenient times for customers.

After experiencing a large amount of nationwide outages on Black Friday last, payday for many has involved a few issues.

Many Brits were hopeful of logging onto their accounts this meaning and being reminded that the last Friday of the month symbolises payday. However, thousands have reported difficulties getting onto their accounts.

HSBC posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, saying: “We’re really sorry that some customers are having issues accessing personal online and mobile banking. Our IT teams are working hard to get these services back to normal. You can still authorise online card purchases via SMS.”

This is the first post from the HSBC UK X account since 2022, perhaps reflecting the seriousness of the situation and the urgency from HSBC to reassure its users.

When trying to access their accounts, many users are seeing the message: “Service unavailable. This service is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.”

HSBC appears to not be the only ones with payday problems

There have also been reports that some Nationwide customers have not received their salaries. Several Virgin Money users also voiced the same issue, however, those appear to have been resolved.

The HSBC issue appears to be different for each user. Some are still able to access their mobile banking app, however they have limited functionality when they enter, such as not being able to view previous transactions or send money to contacts.

At first glance, it does not appear to be quite the meltdown that took place on Black Friday, that being said, when it comes to online banking, no issue is a good issue to have. But the longer it takes to be resolved, the more news coverage it picks up and the more frustrated users get.
