Dutch banking major ING has opened a Developer Portal to speed up application programming interfaces (APIs) innovation by working closely with external developers.

This first version of the portal provides developers access to selected, simulated ING application APIs, which they can use to collectively develop new solutions.

The bank believes that sharing APIs with external developers will accelerate innovation and create new customer experiences.

The portal is available to developers from corporate clients and fintechs who want to partner with ING.

ING global head of transaction services Mark Buitenhek said: “We look forward to increasing choice and value for our customers through a collaborative developer ecosystem.”

The APIs will be provided in a ‘sandbox’, which includes dummy data and functionalities, and comply with the new European Payment Services Directive (PSD2).

The initial simulation APIs offered are: account information services, payment initiation and payment request.

ING chief information officer Ron van Kemenade said: “By making it easy for our internal developers to access our APIs we accelerated the bank’s digitisation globally. We are excited to expand this capability to our clients and selected third parties.”
