Spanish lender la Caixa plans to launch a contactless payment system in Barcelona, based on TAP Visa stickers for mobile devices.
la Caixa will begin rolling out the system in December 2012, with 5,000 customers taking part in the first stage of the project. The TAP Visa sticker distribution will gradually be extended in January – reaching 200,000 users by February 2013, according to the lender.
The system is based on a TAP sticker that attaches to the back of mobile devices and is designed to provide secure data transfers. If the transaction is over 20 euro the customer will be asked to enter their pin code into the terminal.
An EMV chip containing data required to complete payments as if the customer were using their card is located inside the sticker.
la Caixa has 12.5m card customers and 10,000 ATMs across Spain. More than 1m contactless transactions have been completed since the nationwide launch of the contactless payments facility in January 2012, acoridng to la Caixa.
