MasterCard has revealed plans to unveil its new digital payments platform MasterPass, in partnership with several of the country’s major banks.
BNL, a bank under BNP Paribas Group, became the first Italian bank to pilot the MasterPass service leading up to its launch in 2014.
Commenting on behalf of the bank, Marco Tarantola, BNL’s vice-general director and retail and private banking division manager, said: "With this initiative BNL confirms its innovative drive to find solutions that reflect the new habits and lifestyles of the bank’s clients."
Other banks working to implement the platform include Banca Generali, BPM, Findomestic and Intesa Sanpaolo.
According to MasterCard, the platform will enable easier, faster, and safer way online shopping in the country, by enabling customers to complete purchases by entering their MasterPass username and password, instead of their card and shipping details.
Commenting on the move, Paolo Battiston, MasterCard’s country manager for Italy, said: "MasterPass demonstrates MasterCard’s commitment to the development of electronic payments in Italy too."

Deutsche Bank, acquirer CartaSi, and Intesa Sanpaolo’s electronic payments division Setefi have all subsribed to MasterCard’s MasterPass service, and have announced they will activate the service for their business clients in the new year.
