Nationwide Building Society is to deploy the NCR Skimming Protection Solution (SPS) across 424 of its cash machines in the UK.
The security solution from NCR Corporation has been designed to block criminal ‘listening’ devices from capturing card data, and prevents criminals from tampering or removing the original cash machine bezel.
By using real-time, the SPS will also report on the health of the cash machine and can notify financial institutions when an attack is taking place.

By GlobalDataEurope has also experienced increased losses from card fraud attacks; these have risen by 13% in 2012 to $350m. Card skimming losses rose by 12% to $345m.
Nationwide’s announcement comes after a report from Financial Fraud Action UK (FFA) saying there were 7,525 attempts to steal peoples cards while they were using ATMs in the first four months of the year, compared with 2,553 in the similar period in 2012.
The FFA said the number of reported incidents appeared to be increasing every month.
Police in the UK have speculated that the rise in thefts is partly due to the higher security offered by chip and pin cards.
The data was gathered by Vocalink, the company that operates the UK’s national payments infrastructure, and publicised by Financial Fraud Action UK, an industry body responsible for co-ordinating the prevention of card and payments fraud.
