Unibank, the largest bank by assets
headquartered in Haiti, has teamed up with wireless operator Voila
and international relief agency Mercy Corps to introduce a mobile
money service in Haiti.

The mobile payments programme will
enable Mercy Corps’ cash-for-work, grant and food voucher
recipients to use their Voila phones as mobile wallets.

Subject to the approval of Banque
de la Republique d’Haiti’s (Haiti’s Central Bank), Unibank and its
partners plan to extend the initial m-payments service to target
Haiti’s unbanked segment with an expanded range of services,
including domestic and international money transfer, bill pay and
top up services.

Carl Braun, chairman of Unibank
said: “Unibank is pleased to participate in this pioneering effort
to launch mobile money services in Haiti. Mobile money services
will be critical in expanding Unibank’s reach beyond traditional
bank branches and in integrating the unbanked, particularly in
rural areas.

“Mobile money means that basic
financial services will instantly be available throughout the
country.”

Unibank has assets in excess of
$1bn and serves 850,000 customers in Haiti from a 45-strong-branch
network; in addition it has 20 offices specialising in micro
finance.
