Italian bank
UniCredit’s subsidiary in Slovakia has begun deploying a
sticker for contactless payments on mobile phones – the first such
service in the country.
UniCredit Slovakia is Gemalto’s contactless
sticker Optelio. The Optelio sticker is MasterCard certified and
uses the card issuer’s contactless PayPass technology.
The sticker, titled StickAir, can be attached
to any mobile phone handset – to any part of the device – and
enables users to pay for purchases of less than €20 ($17.8). Larger
amounts will require a PIN code.
The sticker, which is microprocessor-based,
works on 3,000 acceptance points across Slovakia, including fast
food restaurants, cinemas and supermarkets.
Monika Kohútová, Head of retail banking
division of UniCredit Bank, said that the sticker can be issued in
relation to any current account open with UniCredit Bank
She said: “Consumers are already accustomed to
swiping their travel card to ride the public transportation in
Slovakia so we believe contactless technology will also gain user
adoption in the payment domain.”
